Metal Detecting Coils

Metal detectors are devices designed to detect the presence of metal. Metal detectors contain metal detecting coils in them. These metal detecting coils are the main components that make the metal detector work. They are fixed in various configurations, in order to dispel disturbances from the environment.

The mechanism behind metal detecting coils is quite simple. Each metal detector has to have its own supply of batteries. These batteries pass a current through the metal detecting coil and create a magnetic field in the metal detecting coil. When the metal detector with the magnetic field is waved over a metal object, a current is generated in the metal object due to the moving magnetic field in the metal detecting coil. The current generated in the metal object then creates a magnetic field opposite to the magnetic field of the metal detecting coil, thus sending a signal to the control box of the metal detector. In essence, every time metal detecting coils come across magnetic fields opposing their own magnetic fields, they start beeping and indicating the presence of metal objects.

There are different types of metal detecting coils. One type is the concentric coil. This, as its name suggests, is round in shape and flattened. These types of metal detecting coils penetrate deeper. But the entire area of the coil does not penetrate to the same depth. The center of the coil detects the deepest and the edges detect lesser depths than the center.

Another type of metal detecting coils is the Double D or DD. These are round, or elliptical in shape. The whole coil detects up to the same depth, unlike concentric coils. But they do not cover as much depth as concentric coils.

Different types of metal detecting coils are used at different locations. If you are metal detecting in wide open spaces, you should use a coil with a wider area. When metal detecting in a small area, full of metal objects, it is advisable to use a search coil with smaller area. Usually, metal detecting coils with smaller area are more sensitive than the ones with wider area.

Metal detecting coils and are available in different brands in the market. Garrett, Bounty Hunter, Minelab and Fisher are a few popular brands of metal detecting coils. They are priced at different prices ranging from around $30 to $500. But the prices can sometimes be out of this range. It is also important that you have a cover for your metal detecting coil. This saves the coil from scraping on the ground and giving fake signals.
