Usually, you are allowed to keep whatever you find on the beach, unless it is a national park or any other site of importance. If you want to metal detect at a beach in a national park, you are expected to get permission from local authorities. You should make sure to have the permission in writing at such beaches, and keep it with you all the while you are metal detecting.
